Position Background:
An opportunity exists for a Linux Engineer who also has strong network background to join the Chicago IT operations team. The primary focus of this role is to evaluate existing infrastructure to identify potential performance issues across all the relevant layers and then work with the operations teams and other business units as required to implement solutions that improve overall system performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain test environments for performance testing and tuning of network equipment, network cards, linux kernels and anything else related to performance
- Maintain and improve systems to record data and measure latency for later performance analysis and reporting in the production/test environments
- Help develop tools to analyse latency and identify problems across all layers of the production environment
- Evaluate and test new technologies/methodologies with the aim to reduce latency in the production environment
- Liaise with exchanges to design new connections and to optimise existing ones
- Maintain relevant documentation/diagrams
- Install, configure and manage switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs & VOIP infrastructure
- Troubleshoot and resolve network problems and assist other teams in problem solving
- Maintain the Tibra network environment across multiple global sites and work as part of a global team
- Provide on-call support as required and be prepared to perform changes outside of production hours
Knowledge & Skills
- Experience with connectivity with all the major US exchanges
- Expert theoretical and practical knowledge of networking
- Cisco certification CCNP or equivalent experience
- Expert knowledge of *nix OS
- Expert practical knowledge of OS/network performance tuning
- Extensive practical programming language knowledge and skills (bash, Python etc)
